Guiding Principles

Splinter believes in, and is guided by, the following principles:

Principle of Unity in Diversity

All people are part of one human family, part of one whole. Diversity must be sincerely valued; diverse elements working in harmony result in the strongest form of unity. Our progress as human beings is dependent upon cooperation and mutual helpfulness. The benefits of social change must be shared by all.

Principle of Service

Actions guided by a spirit of service and free from the desire for personal gain are powerful forces for social change.

Principle of Education

Education is vital to bringing about positive change. Social change organizations are most effective when they use education as a tool, both internally and with the public, to help create a more compassionate and harmonious society. Education is both a right and a responsibility; learning about others and the world is key to becoming an effective force for a more powerful society.

Principle of Justice

The foundation of unity and social well being is a combination of justice and equity. Justice is an inspired balance of understanding, conduct, compromise and wisdom. It requires the establishment and upholding of standards, as well as reasonable and compassionate application of those standards.

Principle of Integrity

Pure motives behind actions are powerful forces for worldwide peace and harmony. Sincere, selfless efforts engender trust, release human potential and inspire others to be of service.

Principle of Ethical Conduct

Honest, fair, compassionate and noble conduct is a critical component of positive social change.

Principle of Open Communication and Decision Making

Considerate and frank communication engenders understanding and trust. It is important that there is a regular sharing of information within social change organizations, as well as efforts to build and maintain positive interpersonal relationships. Participative decision making, when used wisely, generates unity, increases commitment, and improves the quality of decisions.

Principle of Artistic Excellence

Art can serve as an effective vehicle for social change when it strives towards excellence in its expression, reflects noble aspirations of those who create, produce and perform it, and respects those who enjoy it.

Principle of Human Dignity and Equality

All people have inherent worth and capacity. For this reason, all deserve to be treated with equal respect and reverence. It is important to work towards a society free of prejudices of all kinds. Social change efforts should affirm the innate dignity and equality of all people.
